Why Winter Makes Taking Care of Shrubs Difficult

Anyone who has had the experience of taking care of a garden will tell you that winter time is one of the most difficult seasons to manage. Leaves fall and are replaced by a coat of white, which is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to trees. However, when it comes to bushes and shrubs suddenly things are much more difficult. Unlike the trees, these bushes will not survive having all of its leaves fall. While bushes and shrubs do not need too much care the rest of the year, when it comes to winter time it becomes one of the most vulnerable types of flora. For example, any kind of cutting or shaving to promote a better shape will likely give the shrub a much harder time if done during the winter.

There are also certain things that shrubs or bushes need in order to increase its chances of surviving this time of the year. If it were possible to build your shrub a shelter, then it would be best to get started before winter falls in your area. It does not necessarily have to be an intricate shelter, just something that will stop the snow from falling on your shrubs. Being able to stop the snow from covering this vulnerable part of your garden will help shrubs fight off the effects of winter-burn, which will basically cause your bushes to wither away.

Finally, during the winter, there will also be no chance of any flowers budding from shrubs so you will be able to shelter them completely. A good shelter can be as simple as having a simple roof over the shrub. It is also important to note that you do not have to keep a shrub warm in order to keep it alive. All you need to do is to ensure that it does not get covered in snow.
